TP2.JRP6:  INCREASING CANCER TREATMENT EFFICACY USING 3D BRACHYTHERAPY

The European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) is a multi-year metrology-focused European programme of coordinated R&D that facilitates closer integration of national research programmes, formulated by the "European Association of National Metrology Institutes" (EURAMET e.V.) under the Sixth Framework Programme. EURAMET is a Regional Metrology Organisation (RMO) of Europe. It coordinates the cooperation of National Metrology Institutes (NMI) of Europe in fields like research in metrology, traceability of measurements to the SI units, international recognition of national measurement standards and of the Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC) of its members. Among these tasks, EURAMET is responsible for the elaboration and execution of the EMRP. Under the Seventh Framework Programme, EURAMET receives funding from the European Commission for the project "Implementing Metrology in the European Research Area-Plus" (iMERA-Plus) within the framework of ERANet-Plus for Research & Development according to the EC Grant Agreement No. 217257 between the European Commission and EURAMET e.V.. Within this scope, 21 Joint Research Project have been selected for funding under the EMRP as part of the Targeted Programme Health. According to the recommendation of national medical associations and scientific international organizations, the three years project T2.J06, Increasing cancer treatment efficacy using 3D brachytherapy (short name "Brachytherapy") was launched on July 2008, aiming to establishing a more accurate metrological basis for the dosimetry of radioactive sources used in the clinic for BT across Europe. It responds to the need for traceability of absorbed dose measurements of BT radiation sources to absorbed dose to water primary standards. See for details the publishable summary and the results section.
